Major League Soccer is known for being a progressive league with initiatives that support local communities far beyond the game. The MLS is Back Tournament became a nationally recognized platform for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Before the first match of the tournament on July 8, over 100 black MLS players participated in a joint protest to show solidarity for the Black community. To pay tribute to George Floyd, the players' demonstration lasted 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
Throughout the entire tournament, players, coaches and staff wore these limited edition #MLSisBLACK tees in lieu of training tops. The tees were designed by Philadelphia Union midfielder Warren Creavalle. When asked about his inspiration for the shirt design, Warren explained how the word "Rights" is in capital letters on the back of the tee, because this whole movement is about rights.
MLS will donate all profits from this tee to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, 100 Black Men of America and Player's Coalition in partnership with Black Players for Change. This tee is available for purchase HERE.
Special thanks to Major League Soccer for the images.
